Speculation that Prime Minister Turnbull will make big ministerial changes before the end of the year will be more pronounced following the announcement today of movement at senior levels in the public service (see his media release here.)
Retirements and resignations (notably star performer, Martin Bowles from Health after running Immigration) have prompted the PM to make the announcements before he heads off to the Pacific Islands Forum in Samoa tomorrow and leaves Deputy PM, Barnaby Joyce in charge – which itself portends another unruly parliament next week.
The new department heads are:
Mr Michael Pezzullo, will head up the new Department of Home Affairs when it is established. He is currently Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
Mr Finn Pratt AO PSM will be the Secretary of the Department of the Environment and Energy.
Ms Glenys Beauchamp PSM will become the Secretary of the Department of Health (replacing Martin Bowles).
Dr Heather Smith PSM leaves Department of Communications and the Arts to be the Secretary of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.
Ms Kathryn Campbell CSC will move from the Secretary of the Department of Human Services to the Secretary of the Department of Social Services.
Mr Mike Mrdak AO will move from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development to become the Secretary of the Department of Communications and the Arts.
Ms Renée Leon PSM, will also move from the Department of Employment to become the Secretary of the Department of Human Services.
Ms Kerri Hartland gets a promotion to become the Secretary of the Department of Employment. She was the first woman to serve as Deputy Director-General of ASIO.
Dr Steven Kennedy PSM is also promoted, from Dep Sec in Prime Minister and Cabinet to Secretary of the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development.
